| Applications: | Attributes: |
| Broadcasting | Equipment intensive |
| “One to Many” communications | Requires roof access rights |
| Email | Requires direct line of sight to southern sky, free of power grid obstruction |
| Internet Connectivity | Susceptible to inclement weather |
| Good solution for difficult to reach remote sites | High cost per bandwidth transmitted |
| Does not support Citrix and other latency sensitive applications | Data backchannel often required |
Satellite
Satellite offers excellent geographic coverage, efficient broadcast capabilities, and fully managed services are available. Oil and Gas exploration firms with remote facilities, distance learning and organizations requiring a “one to many” architecture are good candidates for Satellite. Satellite’s weaknesses, however, are latency, line of sight (and weather) dependency and cost. Many restaurant and retail operators find it difficult to run Citrix applications over their networks due to latency, and many have moved away from Satellite as a viable network option.
